My 6 week postpartum update! :)

Postpartum with twins has been an up and down journey- much like pregnancy with twins! There were MANY things that I wasn't prepared for about being postpartum...some good, some bad, some you just don't talk about (which is why I wasn't prepared I guess! LOL)

Here's what surprised me
1. Going to the bathroom after childbirth would not only be an ordeal, it would be a good 10 minute process or so. There are sprays, foams, pads, and very large underwear. Thank goodness for amazing nurses at St. Vincent's Women's Hospital :)

2. My weight didn't dramatically go down upon returning home from the hospital. I was SO excited to jump on the scale after having the girls. After gaining about 40+ pounds over the 9 months, I was ready to see that number finally go down for a change instead of up. Three days after they were born I jumped on the scale to see a 2 pound weight loss... yes, 2 pounds. I birthed over 10 pounds of babies, not to mention two placentas and whatever else comes out. I soon realized this was due to the large amount of IV fluids that were being pushed through me during my 24+ hours of labor. Luckily, I saw this number drop over the next 2-3 weeks.

3. Speaking of water weight... holy cankles! I was very fortunate to not have much swelling in my pregnancy, so when I looked down at my ankles the morning after I gave birth, I couldn't believe my eyes. After lots of water and trying to keep my feet elevated, the swelling went away in about a week.
4. I would still looked pregnant...very pregnant. I knew that my stomach would not bounce back overnight, but I wasn't prepared for a lady at Target to ask me when I was due just three days after having the girls. It took everything I had not to burst into tears...or smack her.
6 days postpartum
5. I couldn't imagine my life without my girls. It's almost like they have always been here in many ways, even though they are only 6 weeks old. They suddenly became my whole world and it's amazing.

Physical Update:

I'm still waiting to be cleared by my doctor to be able to exercise. I have an appointment today and I'm very anxious to get the go ahead to get back to my workouts. Since about 3 weeks postpartum, I have taken daily walks with the girls. I started out very slowly as I was still recovering and have gradually increased my speed and time. Barry and I also purchased new Fitbit's which make getting my 10,000 steps a day more fun...and competitive. I also may have snuck in a couple of pushups, lunges, squats, and some upper body band exercises in the past week.
 (shh, don't tell doc)
6 weeks postpartum
As I've happily lost most of the baby weight very quickly, my stomach/back area is my main focus/ "problem" area. My uterus is still not back to its original size, which is kinda frustrating but understandable seeing how large I was a short 6 weeks ago!

Here's some progression pics:

1 month post partum to 5 weeks post partum- after starting my Advocare Nursing Mom's Challenge

How did I lose the weight?

As of 6 weeks post partum I am down 38 pounds with about 5 more to go and lots of toning up to do. I think breastfeeding/pumping has a lot to do with how quickly the weight came off. My doctor told me I would be burning an extra 1,000 calories a day just from breastfeeding the girls! (That's my kind of workout!)

I was also very aware of how much weight I was gaining during my pregnancy and how quickly, which in turn has made losing the weight much easier. While I was pregnant, I stuck to my clean eating regimen 70%-80% of the time while still allowing myself a sweet treat when I wanted it. My workouts were put to a halt at 10 weeks when I was experiencing some complications. Although I struggled at times with not being able to workout, I took the time to rest, swim (ok, more like float), and continue with simple upper body exercises with 3-5 pound weights and light resistance bands. I happily enjoyed eating extra calories my body (and babies) needed without the guilt.
Since I knew I wouldn't be working out like I had hoped, my diet was even more important in not gaining excess weight and especially now while I continue to try and lose the last of the weight before I can exercise.

Here's an example of my typical postpartum diet:

Breakfast
1/2 cup of plain oatmeal with honey, cinnamon, vanilla Muscle Gain protein, and blueberries (with or without a banana)

Whole wheat English muffin with natural peanut butter and blackberry jelly...if time and the girls allow :)
Mango strawberry spark
Advocare's Catalyst, Probiotic & Thermoplus

AM Snack
Pure Protein bar
1/2 cup cottage cheese

Lunch
6 ounces of lean protein with steamed veggies
-OR-
spinach salad with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, chicken, and feta cheese
light dressing
Greek yogurt cup

PM Snack
My second spark
Hummus and carrots
-OR-
Protein Smoothie

Dinner
1 cup brown rice
6 ounces pork loin
Occasional glass of red wine

Dessert
Strawberries with light cool whip
-OR-
ice cream

Plus
LOTS of water. I keep a glass filled up all day long and refill it as needed

My postpartum diet is a balancing act to determine how many calories I need to continue to lose weight while keeping my milk supply up while breastfeeding.
(feeding twins is no joke!)
I'm excited to step things up a notch and continue to see progress as I strive for my healthy and fit #mombod :)

Lily and Maddie's 1 month update (May 2015)

Ever since I got pregnant I have had people tell me, "It goes by so fast!" but nothing can truly prepare you for how quickly your baby (or babies!) changes in just one month. My labor and delivery feels like a dream along with the first couple of weeks of the girls' lives.  It's amazing seeing their personalities come out and the little people they are becoming. Here's their 1 month update :)

Baby "A" : Liliana Margaret: 4/24/15- 6:54pm- 5 lbs 2 ounces- 19 inches
1 month: 7 lbs 5 ounces
Lily was  always ready to be the first twin out. Baby A, or "Amy" as my Dad started to call her early on in my pregnancy, was head down and about as low as she could go. In the monthly ultrasounds, her nose would always appear smashed as she was pushing her way down and as far away from her sister as she could be. It shouldn't have come as a surprise then when she decided to jump start my labor at 34.5 weeks or that in her first picture she would be wide awake and ready to take on this big world.

The first picture of our girls

Lily's likes:

Eating
We discovered very early on that she was a great eater and loves her bottles. She has even been known to finish off her sister's bottle when Maddie has had enough.
Staring/Being awake
At about 2-3 weeks we started to notice that she was staying awake a lot more between feeds and really focusing on our faces and anything bright.
She loves looking at the dots on her Rock N' Play

Being held
I think both girls are guilty of this, which is why these moments happen.. and are my favorite!
They love their Daddy

Snuggles with Poppy... and sister are the best!

Momma and sissy snuggles

Lily's Dislikes:
 Napping
Taking after her father, she seems to think she is going to miss something if she falls asleep during the day.
Waiting for her sister to burp during feeds
When feeding both girls there comes a time where you must set down the bottles and burp them. Lily will kick and cry until her bottle is back in her mouth, while Maddie quietly waits her turn. She is working on learning the art of patience :)

Baby "B" : Madelyn Rose: 4/24/15- 7:09 pm- 4 lbs 15 ounces- 18.25 inches
1 month: 7 pounds 0.5 ounces

Maddie is our little fighter. After coming into this world weighing less than 5 pounds, she was the first baby that came home from the hospital on May 3rd . From what we have seen so far, I think Maddie will have skin that tans very easily and dark hair. Her eyes are currently blue, just like Lily's, and they don't appear to be changing colors anytime soon. From before she was born we thought she looks like my Dad and those traits are still very prominent. She has a distinct strawberry birthmark on her left bicep and a small hernia in her stomach, causing her belly button to stick out. The birthmark should stay, but her doctor thinks the hernia should heal itself by her 18 month checkup.

Maddie's likes:
Stare/Play with her sister
Each morning I place the girls together for some sister bonding time. Maddie will stare at Lily and watch her every move.

Having her hands by her face
Just like her 9 week ultrasound picture, Maddie likes her arms up by her ears/eyes and her legs Indian Style. This seems to be her comfort zone when she is trying to fall asleep or calm herself down.

Cat naps
Just like her Mom, she can easily fall asleep... anytime, anywhere. She usually doesn't fall asleep for too long, but seems to be the more relaxed of the two girls.

Maddie's Dislikes:
Finishing her bottle
Both girls are eating 100ml of breast milk (a little more than 3 ounces) every 3 hours during the day. Maddie will take her first 2 ounces like a champ and struggle to finish the last ounce during most feeds. This usually ends with Lily getting a little extra...notice the 5 ounce difference in weight lol.
Burping
Girlfriend seems to not want to give up the burps. She is starting to get a little better after taking some tips from Lily, but still makes us work for them.
Diaper changes
You would think she was being tortured when she is getting her diaper changed. Nothing we have tried has been successful to stop her crying, so instead we treat it as a pit stop and time how quickly we can get it done.

And because you can never have too many pictures of little babies... here are their 1 month pictures I took in their nursery.
Maddie is on the left and Lily is on the right

I'm so in love with my girls and our new family. I can't wait to continue to watch them grow over the coming months and years.
XoXo

31 week twin bump date!

31 Week Bump Date

My age: 29
How far along: 31 weeks
How big is baby: We were quite surprised when at our ultrasound this Monday we found out that Baby A is 4 lbs and Baby B is 3 lbs 13 ounces! They are growing big and healthy which is great news.
Weight Gain: I haven't weighed myself this week.
Exercise/Activity Level: Monday was also my last day of work so I won't be teaching any more group fitness classes for awhile. This week I went to the gym a couple days to swim/float in the therapy pool at the Healthplex. I also lifted some light weights for my upper body and did some home garage workouts with my bands.
Maternity clothes:  The amount of shirts that currently fit is getting smaller and smaller. I am wearing a tight long tank under most shirts to make sure my belly doesn't hang out of the bottom.
Stretch marks: Stretch marks made their appearance this week. I could tell they were going to pop up soon because of how itchy my stomach has been lately. I can't tell how bad they will be yet, since they are mostly white right now... we shall see!
Belly button: Flat/Outie.
Sleep: I'm still sleeping pretty good with the exception of one night waking up at 4am--completely wide awake. I read that this can start to happen, but luckily it only happened the one night so far.
Best moment of the week: Seeing our girls on the ultrasound was amazing. I still sometimes have a hard time believing this is real after everything Barry and I have been through to get to this point. I am in awe watching them move around and knowing that I'm carrying two human lives that will soon come into this world and call me "Mom."
Food cravings: Sweets are my friend. Ice cream, brownies, cake, etc are all things I am loving these days (in moderation, of course)

Food aversions: None
Symptoms:
  • Pubic bone pain: this pain actually isn't as bad these days since my hip pain is taking over as my #1 symptom
  • Round ligament pain in the hips: This is getting worse as my stomach continues to get bigger and bigger.
Movement: The kicks are now becoming more like full movements. I can feel the girls hands down super low and their feet around my belly button. There are super strong movements that sometimes hurt! I have been able to get some video clips of them moving which looks like aliens moving around in my stomach-- pretty crazy!
Gender: Girls
Labor Signs? Braxton Hicks contractions
What I'm looking forward to:  Being able to be at home getting things ready for our girls and resting. I am glad to be off my feet and able to keep these girls cooking for several more weeks.
What I’m nervous about: Getting two steroids shots. This will help prepare the girls lungs in case they are to arrive premature, but still makes me nervous since I dislike needles greatly.
What I miss: My stretch mark free tummy
Next appointment: Weekly Monday appt. at 3:30pm

29 week bumpdate with twins!

29 Week Bump Date

My age: 29
How far along: 29 weeks
How big is baby: We have an ultrasound next Monday, but I'm guessing the girls are both about 3+lbs.
Weight Gain: My weight gain was pretty steady again this week- gaining 1lb since last week.
Exercise/Activity Level: This week I taught a couple Quick Fit classes- a lower intensity, 10 minute class that combines upper and lower body exercises. I only use 3 lb weights, but at least feel like I'm doing something for my muscles. I was able to get to the pool twice this week to swim, float, and feel weightless. I always feel so much better if I can get in the pool a couple times a week.
Maternity clothes:  All my weekend/dressy clothes are all maternity. My shirts I bought just a couple weeks ago are already getting to small with my belly hanging out of the bottom! :(
Stretch marks: Still none on my belly, but it has been super itchy this week. I think they are just around the corner, but who knows!
Belly button: Flat/Outie.
Sleep: Getting in and out of the bed is becoming quite a challenge. My hips really start to ache once I have been laying for awhile and it's super painful to move from side to side during the middle of the night. I wake up a couple of times a night due to the pain and have to move (slowly and painfully) to the other side. I'm also taking up more and more room in the bed with my expanding belly, pregnancy pillow, and extra pillow for my back not leaving much room for my poor hubby!
Best moment of the week: We had our second baby shower on Sunday. (technically the first day of Week 30) I was blown away by all my friends and family who showed up and spent time with us celebrating our girls. We had a wonderful afternoon at Dawson's Too and came home with a van full of goodies for the girls. We were able to spend more time with family that evening as well.
Food cravings: Sweets are still my go to! I haven't had the donut craving quite as bad as I did a couple of weeks ago, but ice cream, milkshakes, and frozen yogurt are my guilty pleasures. I try and only get this treat a couple times a week and stick to fruit throughout the week.
My Saturday night treat- A chocolate shake from Hardee's!

Food aversions: None
Symptoms:
  • Pubic bone pain: this pain is quite constant and not super fun. I have a feeling it won't go away until these little girls arrive in the next 6-8 weeks.
  • Round ligament pain in the hips: getting worse! Hurts the most in the mornings right when I wake up and in the evenings after working all day.
  • Slight lower back pain: only if I am on my feet too long. I feel pretty lucky in this regard that my back has been relatively pain free- especially with this huge belly I'm carrying around these days!
Movement: The girls were kinda slow moving this week compared to the past couple of weeks of dancing and kicking. This week I felt a lot more movement super low which I think is where Baby A's hands are located. If I sit down after being active for awhile, I can just watch my stomach and the kicks and movements are noticable from the outside. I love feeling them move and constantly have my hand on my stomach :)
Gender: Girls
Labor Signs? No Braxton Hicks or contractions this week. I'm not showing any signs of labor which is great- we want our girls as healthy as can be and the longer they are in, the better!
What I'm looking forward to:  Our ultrasound on Monday, March 30th. I'm excited to see how big the girls are now, what position they are in, and hopefully a glimpse at their cute little faces!
What I’m nervous about: I'm a little nervous about getting everything "done" before they arrive. I know we don't have to have the nursery completed and everything exactly where we think it should go, but it would make me feel better going into labor knowing this is done. I'm getting more nervous about delivery with all the unknowns.
What I miss: My flat stomach, walking without waddling, and being able to eat a full meal without feeling full half way through.
Next appointment: Monday, March 30th- regular OB appt at 3pm and an ultrasound at 3:20pm!

28 week bumpdate with twins!

28 Week Bump Date

My age: 29
How far along: 28 weeks
How big is baby: Each baby is at least 2.5 lbs a piece, if not more!
Weight Gain: Weight went down from last week-  up 26 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight of 135 pounds which is right on track for twins.
Exercise/Activity Level: Zero gym days this week :( The hip/groin pain was pretty intense on Monday and Tuesday, but I started to feel really good towards the end of the week. The weather warmed up so I felt like I was outside and moving more than I have been in the cold winter months.
Maternity clothes:  Workout pants still fit from pre-pregnancy, but that's about it! All other shirts, jackets, and jeans are maternity. My mom has spoiled me now twice with shopping sprees to Target and Old Navy to get new spring attire for my expanding waistline.
Stretch marks: Still none on my stomach/hips... I'm continuing my lotion/baby oil routine 2-3 times a day.  I still think it's a matter of time before they show up, but we shall see!
Belly button: Flat/Outie.
Sleep: I'm still sleeping very well for being this far along in my pregnancy. I moan and grown when I have to move from side to side in the middle of the night, but fall right back to sleep. I think that bathroom breaks during the middle of the night might be making a reappearance. I have been lucky enough to avoid them during the second trimester, but I think the babies are giving my bladder very little space these days!
Best moment of the week: I had my first baby shower this weekend in Greensburg, IN with Barry's family and friends. It was decorated so cute (thanks to my sister-in-law, Kathy)! It was such a blessing to be able to share in the excitement of our girls with so many people who love us. During our infertility journey, I thought I would never get to experience things like a baby shower and now it's happening. I'm so blessed!
Food cravings: Sweets are still my favorite at the moment. I was craving Yogulatte after our first hint of warm weather, but resisted all week until Friday. After work I drove straight there and devoured it. It was worth every calorie :)
Food aversions: None
Symptoms:
  • Pubic bone pain
  • Round ligament pain in the hips
  • Slight lower back pain
Movement: Lots of kicks and dancing! It was fun to have my niece Lauren feel the babies kick on Saturday. She watched them move around through my shirt and couldn't believe how weird it is to feel their little arms/legs kick in my belly.
    Gender: Girls
Labor Signs? I had a couple of painful Braxton Hicks contractions on Tuesday AM which led me to take the day off and just rest. My belly was tight all day which isn't normal for me. It went away by Tuesday night and the rest of the week I felt pretty good.
What I'm looking forward to:  My second baby shower with my side of the family/friends on Sunday, March 22nd and seeing the babies on March 30th at our next ultrasound!
What I’m nervous about:  I would say Barry is more nervous about this than me, but it would probably be getting everything done before the girls make their appearance. With not knowing when they may arrive, we don't know if we have 1 week or 9 to complete all that is on our to-do list.
What I miss: A glass of wine, my workouts, and being able to sleep comfortably.
Next appointment: I'm back to weekly appointments so I will be seeing my OB every Monday at 3:30pm until these girls arrive in May :)

27 week bump date with twins!

    27 Week Bump Date

    My age: 29
    How far along: 27 weeks
How big is baby: On Monday, Baby A was 2.3 pounds and Baby B was 2.5 pounds. They are about 14-15 inches long
Weight Gain: Up 26 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight of 135 pounds.
Exercise/Activity Level:  This week begins are busy month of March while means less time for the gym. I'm still not supposed to be exercising much minus walking/swimming/stretching. Barry and I went to the gym on Wednesday and I swam for 15 minutes or so which definitely helps my back.
Maternity clothes:  I can still get away with wearing some of my regular yoga/workout pants to work as long as they sit below the belly. All my shirts now are too small and my belly hangs out of the bottom.
Stretch marks: None on my stomach/hips... for now! I'm applying lotion 2-3 times a day as I know my stomach is being stretched to the max.
    Belly button: Flat/Outie.
Sleep: I'm more and more uncomfortable at night. My hips are beginning to ache and I still have a sharp pain in my pubic bone when I try and move from side to side. The doctor said my body is starting to loosen the joints to prepare for childbirth so this fun will continue for the next 2.5 months :) I only wake up a couple of times a night to reposition my growing belly and try and get comfortable.
Best moment of the week: Seeing the girls at our ultrasound appointment on Monday with Barry and my parents by my side. We were finally able to get a good look at Baby A which hasn't happened in over a month. Baby B was the shy one this time, but did show us she's growing quite the hair! Following our ultrasound was our hospital visit. It was surreal to see where we will become a family of 4! Everything is starting to become more real.
Food cravings: My appetite seems to be increased this week. I haven't wanted the food I have brought from home and am wanting to eat a lot more this week than previous weeks. I assume that means we are up for another growth spirt!

    Food aversions: None
    Symptoms:
    • Pubic bone pain
    • Round ligament pain in the hips
Movement: Lots of kicks and dancing
    Gender: Girls
Labor Signs? I have had a couple of Braxton Hicks contractions this week. They haven't been painful though- which is good!
What I'm looking forward to:  I'm looking forward to our baby classes next week and baby shower!
What I’m nervous about:  I'm a little nervous about the baby class, specifically watching a birth.
What I miss: Being able to move around easily, my workouts, and sleeping pain-free!
Next appointment: I'm back to weekly appointments so I will be seeing my OB every Monday at 3:30pm until these girls arrive in May :)
